Puteri Marini's practice emerged independently, without the framework of formal academic training. This independence allowed her to approach Islamic calligraphic tradition with a freshness unburdened by rigid stylistic expectations. Her brushwork is urgent and unguarded; her compositions, while anchored in traditional motifs, feel spontaneous and emotionally immediate. The slight irregularities in her letterforms, the visible energy of her brushstrokes, and the impasto peaks catching light all assert the human presence in devotion—her hand serving as conduit between earthly garden and heavenly illumination.

Legacy

Puteri Marini passed away in 2016, leaving behind a substantial body of work that remains primarily in private hands. This artwork represents a heartfelt contribution to contemporary Malaysian and Islamic visual culture, demonstrating that the centuries-old conversation between word and image remains vital even when practiced outside the academy and the gallery system.
